Here's a wonderful Bob Mintzer recording featuring Peter Erskine, Joey Calderazzo, Jeff Andrews, Michael Formanek and Frankie Malabe. Great playing by all involed. Sorry for the MP3 files but this comes from a CD copy I got from a friend in Europe. If anyone has a FLAC copy feel free to share.

To all, may 2010 bring you and yours the best that life has to offer (but more importantly may it bring some GREAT blog post).

Mike Stern - Dutch Radio Recording - mp3@VBR - NMR

Here's something I came across a while back. Don't ask me for any scans, lineage, venue, date or any other information because I have none. What I can tell you is that there are about a half dozen tight, clean, small venue jams. For the completeists this is a nice addition based on superb sound. If you have to have all the info tidbits, oh well, sorry!

Jack DeJohnette Special Edition "Audio-Visual Landscapes" (Vinyl Rip)

After all these merry times, it's time for some mean fusion/jazz. This is a vinyl rip, and as always, report any corrupted files, please. Oh, and just for the curious, there's a super killer version of the 1st track on YouTube featuring Pat Metheny. The saxophone solos on that particular version boggled my tiny mind for a looooong time. Worth checking out.

First, let me say thanks to Chezmateo for letting me contribute to his wonderful blog.

For my first share I'd like to post this 'OOP'/hard to find recording. This is the MP3's from a cassette I made for myself back in the day (cover art downloaded from internet). I also have Vol. 1, but as of now I don't have a way to rip my few remaining LP's. As soon as I get a converter I share that rip also.

I do own quite a few 'OOP' Modern Jazz/Fusion CD's & Cassettes recording that I'll share here when I do get the chance to post. So to all...Enjoy!!!

Here's a recording that I find myself coming back to every so often. Some great playing by Chris Hunter (Alto Sax).

I recently took a little break from the Blog-sphere (is that a word, probably not). I needed to recharge my musical batteries. I wanted to take some time and really listen to and enjoy the art of Jazz instead of hunting through the blogs. But I plan to make up for my absence by posting a few more of my OOP CDs. I've come accross a few CDs in my collection that I'm sure many of the readers of this fine blog will find very enjoyable!

Nelson Rangell - Truest Heart (1993) FLAC w. Scans - MR

Not long before Nelson left GRP for the exclusive Shanachie label, this release still had a lot of the muscle of his several prior GRP outings. Smooth jazz with a very rhythmic and techno-layered edge, this one will still please most ears. Nelson's unique sound, after sounding like a Sanborn take-off on his freshman outing, 'Playing For Keeps', has matured wonderfully by this point and it shows.

Brian Auger's Oblivion Express - The Complete Live Oblivion (1974) FLAC w. Scans - MR

Here's another one that returned from the beach house for the winter. No jazz trio here, but certainly a classic. I was listening to some Frank Gambale with Brian Auger on keys and organ and this relic instant became forefront in my noggin. Ligertwood's vocals strikingly talk me back to those '80's-something Santana years, as well as the few cuts Alex did with T Lavitz. Get this while you can for free.....I've seen this go for nearly $100 U.S. on Amazon.com

Ronnie Montrose - Music From Here (1994) FLAC w. Scans - MR

Guys, if you don't have this one you simply have a hole in your bucket. That, my favorite expression, was once reserved for quintessential landmark titles such as 'Kind Of Blue', 'Blow By Blow', 'Tales From The Bulge', or even 'Enigmatic Ocean'. This seemingly obscure oddity from a six-string god pulls this right to the upper-crust of my all-time favorites. Clean, fluid and tight, Ronnie's guitar has a distinct tone that has become a signature sound. My first request goes out......download this now!

Mulgrew Miller - Getting To Know You (1995) FLAC w. Scans - MR

Anonymous asked for more releases from the Novus label. This is one that comes to mind that hasn't been posted here before. The Clide Criner, and Charlie Elgart in particular were big hits for posts from the same label. Others from the label including Night Ark have eluded my vinyl transcription patience. Someday I will transcribe the last 303 pieces of vinyl, from a collection that once totaled 5000, remaining as tokens for lost gems that never got elevated to re-issue status. Someday!!!

Marc Russo - The Window (1994) FLAC w. Scans - MR

Here's a re-post by request for Pedro. I always dug Marc's playing. He's spontaneous, playful, full of soul, and clearly has a sound of his own and is instantly identifiable. It just seems he was a mismatch for the Yellowjackets in the years he was on board. Some of the more forgetful years from the Yellowjackets were when Marc was there. Sorry, Marc, I still love you man!

Jeff Lorber Fusion - "Wizard Island" (1980) @320

"A Jazz Fusion Must Have! Featuring Kenny Gorelick"
HO BOYEEE! A classic Jazz Fusion Album from one of the genre's best bands. I have such fond memories and thoughts of this album, growing up in Oakland, California. This album really shows off all of the band member's talents especially a young Kenny G., who was then known as Kenny Gorelick. This is the type of music I wish Kenny and Jeff would return to making, remembering their roots. Originally released in 1980, if you can get your hands on a copy of this tremendous album you won't be disappointed! Maestro Jeff's musicianship and Danny Wilson's thumping and popping will have you "movin', groovin and doin' it you know!" This band was tight. A superbly crafted piece of art with flawless mastering, mixing and musicianship, every cut a delight. This album is on my personal list of "Music to perserve for all time" or "The top 10 albums you would take in exile on a deserted isle!" By Christopher D. Green (Liberty Farms, California United States).

"LORBER & COMPANY TEAR IT UP!!"
Simply put, this is a must-have Lorber CD, period! This was back when Kenny G actually had some fire to his playing. I still have this on vinyl and now CD and still listen to it regularly.
The band is super tight, energetic, and smokin'! Lorber has such a great feel for the keys and his playing is very tasty. The track 'Lava Lands' is my favorite and it just smokes. What a groove! Dennis Bradford holds it all together with some tight, funky, jazzy drumming. I love his drumming on this disc.
Sadly Jeff Lorber seens to be overlooked by way too many music fans and that is sad as the man is extremely talented. I've seen him in concert 3 times and he never disappoints. He has quite a few excellent releases in his catalog but like I said, this one in particular is a must-have! By Baddstuff "music junkie" (astoria, ny United States).

"Instant Classic...... Heaven or Perfection?.... you choose."
I bought this album(...YEAH I SAID ALBUM) in 1980 at 16 or 17.
This has got to be one of the best examples of the past, present, and future of this jazz form called Fusion!! ANYWHERE..EVER..PERIOD!
Past..... Jeff some how got his mentor legend Chick "Armandos Rumba" Corea to play one of the tights keyboard duo's we know of on "Roof tops".
Present...... Jeff shows off his mastery of band leading, and producing like an elder statesmen 30 years his senior.
Future...... Jeff had the insight to use the young (and then unknown outside of the Liberace orchestra) superstar Kenny.G (Then Kenny Gorelick before his elevator music affection took hold) to play sax on cuts like "Fusion Juice" and "Sweet" that were so tight to Jeffs keyboard that you can't tell if its a synth playing sax or a sax microed to moog.
The only downfall of this album is that it challenges "Softspace" (from 1978) for the spot of very best JLF album of all time. The only solution is to get both of them (Wizard Island and Softspace). Pay full retail if need be.
Warning..... Do not operate any vehical moving faster then "Park" or you will crash from druming on your dashboard! By Shanq "akronexpress" (Akron Oh)

"The Kick Off!"
Jeff Lorber adds future solo muzak man Kenny Gorelick to his
musical arsenal and delivers a second Arista album! Now this is
an obvious follow up to "Water Sign" whitch I think could be
recommended first but 'Wizard Island" feaures the dancable
"Fusion Juice",the funky "City" and "Lava Lands",each of whitch
features Lorber's intruiging horn-like synthesizer phrasing.The
amazing feature here is Kenny's inventive, wailing sax solo's
(absolutely nothing like what he's become known for as a solo
artist) so move over Yellowjackets and Spyro Gyra! The Jeff
Lorber Fusion is definately misclassified-being actually one of
the jazzier fusion groups recording in the late 1970's and early
80's. By Andre' S Grindle "Funk Meister" (Bangor,ME.).

Jeff Lorber

Track Listing:

1. Wizard Island
2. Sweet
3. Can't Get Enough
4. Reflections
5. Fusion Juice

Giampaolo Ascolese Trio feat. Steve Grossman - The Clinica 21 Concert (1999) FLAC w/Complete cover scans

Here's a CD I recently picked up in Italy. Steve Grossman sounds great as usual, and he's playing with a wonderful rhythm section. For the last few yrs Steve has consistently recorded jazz standards and songs from the American songbook. He doesn't deviate from that formula here.

Here's a short review:

"There's a lot of wonderful improvised music emanating from Italy these days, and if any generalizations can be made relative to the caliber of the performances, the next generation of musicians have taken the art of listening and interaction to the next level. In nine contrasting pieces, including Monk's "I Mean You" and Blue Mitchell's rarely recorded "Funji Mama," Ascolese's powerful rhythmic drive effectively serves Grossman but does not overpower him. And anyone who questions whether chromatic invention can exist in relation to conventional chord sequences should listen carefully to Renzi's solo on the Miles Davis piece, "Four," which is awash in a full spectrum of color. There are no overdubs or electronic samples here; this is a heartfelt, real-time performance in the very best sense. Highly recommended." by James D. Armstrong, Jr.

Personnel:

Giampaolo Ascolese - Drs
Gianluca Renzi - Bass
Steve Grossman - Tenor Sax

I do believe all credit for this show must go to Fred over at Dr. Fusion. Surely, this show came from his blog before the hacker fiasco altered the landscape. This is a very good quality audience recording which marks a strong 'A'.

Al Foster-Mixed Roots (1978) FLAC w/Complete cover scans

This one is for the Michael Brecker completist. This rare and hard to find recording captures a young Brecker who's starting to find his voice. A lot of his sound and mannerisms are already in place. You also get a chance to hear some of Michael's under recorded soprano sax playing.

You can find the MP3's of a Vinyl rip at the "Orgy in Rhythm" blog. This rip comes from my Japanese reissue CD.

Personnel:

Drums: Al Foster
Piano: Masabumi Kikuchi, Teo Macero
Guitar: Paul Metzke
Electric bass: T.M.Stevens, Jeff Berlin
Acoustic bass: Ron McClure
Saxophones: Michael Brecker, Bob Mintzer,
Sam Morrison, Jim Clouse (also flute)

Jimi Hendrix - "Stages" [4 CD Box] (1991) @320

Hendrix was born James Marshall Hendrix in Seattle, Washington, the son of Al Hendrix and Lucille Jeter Hendrix. His father, after returning from military service in World War II, legally renamed him James Marshall Hendrix. His mother was an alcoholic and died of cirrhosis when Jimi was 15, providing Hendrix with a musical muse which he would later express in his songs, for example, "Little Wing".

Both of Jimi's paternal grandparents were vaudeville performers who settled in Vancouver, British Columbia, where his father, Al Hendrix, was born. Al relocated to Seattle, where he met and married Lucille Jeter. Jimi was close to his paternal grandmother Nora Rose Moore, the daughter of a Cherokee father and a mulatto mother, who instilled in him a strong sense of pride about his Native American ancestry.

Stages is a box set consisting of live performances by Jimi Hendrix covering four years of his career. Disc One is the September 5, 1967 concert in Stockholm. Disc Two is the January 29, 1968 concert in Paris. Disc Three is the May 24, 1969 concert in San Diego. Disc Four is the July 4, 1970 concert in Atlanta.

The first 2 cds(Stockholm 67, Paris 68) capture the experience in all their early euphoria. CDs 3 & 4 - San Diego 69 and Atlanta 70 (the latter with Billy Cox replacing Noel Redding on bass), are much better as live recordings. The band here really cooks with blistering versions of older songs and some great new songs.

If you want to experience live Hendrix, then stages is as good a place to start as any.

Another great show by the Species. I'm always looking eagerly to their free (YES, FREE!!!) monthly gigs at the Avenue Ale House. Great music, food and beer. Led by the highly underrated fusion-guitar virtuoso Bob Baglione and the always fiery Carl Coan, these guys smoke every time I see them. For this show, my trusty CSB mics needed repair, so I was forced to use the Edirol's built-in mics. The results are very good nevertheless. Enjoy!!!

Das Pferd - Blue Turns To Grey (1991)-[flac]-MR-

Well, this is really heartbreaking. I don’t have much information about this group except that Kurt Billker(drums), Wolfgang Schmidtke(saxophone) and Markus Wienstroer(Guitar) are among the players.
I cloned the original cd many years ago, in a hurry, without having time to do more. The band rolls like clockwork and the music is always very inspired. So if you like Weather Report and The YellowJackets this is highly recommended!!!

Acoustic Quartet - Exciting Story featuring: BOB BERG [1996](FLAC w/ Scans) Contemporary Jazz -MR-

Anyone that knows me, is aware that I am a DIE-HARD Bob Berg freak, one of my ALL-TIME favorite musicians. This guy possessed an incredible combination of fire and melodicsm. Just a stunning performer, especially live, as on this date recorded in '96 on his European tour. He enlisted a Polish rhythm section, featuring drummer Krzysztof Zawadzki, from the fusion band WALKAWAY. The performances from all the players, are nothing short of spectacular. Enjoy this rare gem, from one of the greatest musicians of our time. R.I.P Bob!!! You are REALLY missed...

Bob Mintzer-Hymn (1992) FLAC w/no scans

I'm headed to Italy tomorrow to perform at a couple of festival, one being the Umbria Jazz Fest. I couldn't leave without posting one from the last of the 3-Bobs. This is an early Bob Mintzer quartet recording.

review:

Better known as a big band and session player, tenor saxophonist and bass clarinetist Bob Mintzer expanded his playing and his repertoire on this '92 quartet date. Working with guitarist John Abercrombie, bassist Marc Johnson, and drummer Peter Erskine, Mintzer moved into more probing, unpredictable, and challenging areas and played with more fire and conviction. Abercrombie, Johnson, and Erskine each fulfilled their reputations; the results were both enlightening and surprising. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide

Bob Berg-New Birth (1978) 320 kbps/no scans

Here's one from another one of the 3 Bobs. This is Bob Berg's long OOP debut recording (sorry I only have the 320 kbps MP3). There's some GREAT post-bop playing from Bob, Tom Harrell and Cedar Walton. Don't pass this one up!

review:

Tenor-saxophonist Bob Berg's debut as a leader is mostly in the bop vein although he does his best to break down the boundaries a bit. With trumpeter Tom Harrell sharing the frontline and Cedar Walton (on both acoustic and electric piano) heading the fine rhythm section, Berg performs four group originals, the classic ballad "You're My Thrill" and a reworking of "This Masquerade." It's an impressive debut for the young tenor. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Chris Hunter (1986) FLAC w/scans

A lot of you may not know of Chris Hunter, but if you dig David Sanborn you'll dig Chris. Chris sound just like 70's, early 80's era Sanborn. In fact, of the 3 popular Sanborn clones (the other 2 being Nelson Rangell and Andy Snitzer) Chris Hunter comes the closest in my opinion. None of this is a slight on Chris' playing, he's a world class player who's played with everyone. I think currently he's holding down the sax chair in Michael Franks' band.

This CD features Hiram Bullock on Guitar, Richard Tee on Keys, Anthony Jackson or Darryl Jones on Bass and the one and only Steve Jordan on Drums. Again, this recording sounds like a session David Sanborn would have done.

Chris is one of my favorite saxophonist and I have quite a few recordings of his and other's that he has participated in. If there's enough interest in this post I'll surely share some more Chris Hunter. Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

Jack Wilkins - "Alien Army" (1991) @320

Jack Wilkins - "Alien Army"
Editorial Reviews
...Jack Wilkins enters the realm of the certifiably slick. Long admired as a chord-melodist of the first rank...on ALIEN ARMY Wilkins demonstrates a new level of relaxation and keen sense of form and development to go along with his formidable chops, yet never whips it out simply for the sake of technical display...harmonically surprising and authentically funky.

'Difficult Balance' said that Eddie Daniels is the best clarinetist since Benny Goodman. I couldn't agree more. I moved this forward from November 2008 to add more ED excitement .

This goes out to Flavio Ricardo from Rio de Janeiro in Brasil, by request. Steve Khan is indeed the guitarist on this CD. It's not my favorite of Eddie's but it does have his trademark sound with a great rhythm section.

Dave Weckl - drums
Sammy Figueroa - percussion

I moved this post up from December 2008 to further extend this Eddie Daniels extravaganza!

A few months ago someone asked me what my favorite CD was at the time I posted 'Blackwood'. Eddie's 'This Is Now' was posted a while back and is my favorite; this runs a close second. A different cast on all three CD's, it goes like this:

Chuck Loeb - guitar
John Patitucci - bass
Dave Weckl - drums
Adam Nussbaum - drums
Sammy Figueroa - percussion
Eddie Daniels - clarinet

Maxus - Maxus (1981) FLAC w. Scans - MR

OK, let's get something straight....since you've noticed Michael Landau's name, this is NOT what you think. This release on WEA has a very early Toto sound to it. Throw in the mid 80's Santana 'Marathon' sound, then for some added pop, stir in the Marc Russo-era 'Yellowjackets' R&B flash and you have a very west coast LA session that is AOR all the way. No heavy leads from Landau like with Karizma, Raging Honkies, Burning Water, etc. This is for the Michael Landau aficionado and completest crowd. You have been forewarned!

Kenny Kirkland (GRP: 1991) (Verve: 1998) FLAC w/full front cover scans

Here's the only solo release of a jazz pianist who left us way too soon. This is the Verve re-release, it was originally a GRP release. Kenny Kirkland was "Super Bad!!!" He brought a high level of virtuosity and artistic creativity to any musical situation that he participated in. His keyboard solo on "When The World Is Running Down (You Make The Best Of What's Still Around)" from Sting's live CD release "Bring On The Night" is beyond good. From 1981 (while playing in Wynton Marsalis' band) until his death in 1998 Kenny was the leading young jazz pianist of his generation.

Personnel:

Kenny Kirkland (piano, keyboards), Branford Marsalis (soprano & tenor saxophones), Charnett Moffet, Robert Hurst, Christian McBride (bass), Steve Berrios (drums, percussion), Jeff "Tain" Watts (drums), Don Alias (bongos, percussion), Jerry Gonzalez (congas, percussion)

A great record (to say nothing of the artwork).

Scott Yanow says :
"Pianist Hilton Ruiz mixes together elements of salsa, r&b, funk and jazz
but, instead of his music becoming some type of hybrid, the result is a
very danceable variety of jazz that is both accessible and challenging."

Joey Calderazzo - To Know One (1992) FLAC w. Scans - MR

Somebody asked for something obscure with Jerry Bergonzi and this this is what I came up with. Outside of Jerry's solo stuff, and his work on Fast Company, I don't know of much else. Nevertheless, Joey C. busts out his awesome piano led band with a stellar cast as follows:

Dave Holland
Jack DeJohnette
Branford Marsalis
Jerry Bergonzi

Kimiko Kasai-My One And Only Love (1985)-320 kbps

At first glance this recording may not impress you, but when you check out the supporting players, how could you go wrong.

This is a very rare and out of print Japanese recording. I first heard this recording when I was doing a tour of Asia in the late 80's. I lost my cassette copy  years ago and I've been looking for a CD replacement ever since. Kimiko Kasai is a good jazz singer and this rhythm section can't be beat.  I'm sorry that I only have the 320 kbps MP3's. If someone has a FLAC upgrade please let me know.

Personnel:

Kimiko Kasai: vocal
Cedar Walton: piano
Ron Carter: bass
Al Foster: drums
Michael Brecker: tenor saxophone on tracks #1,#3,#5,#6,#9
Mike Stern: guitar on tracks #2,#4,#7,#8

Well, i couldn't resist.

This is where it all started with Jimmy Herring...breaking new grounds with astonishing chops, great melodies and powerful jams with some of the best musicians around. The band evolved though different incarnations with Colonel Bruce Hampton, Jeff Sipe, Matt Mundy and others, but this DVD is from the last phase of the band with Oteil Burbridge(Oteil and the PeaceMakers) before they went separate ways. Aquarium Rescue Unit - Eeepeee (1994) FLAC w. Scans - NMR

To the guy who said on the “ARU - In A Perfect World” post (a few posts below) that vocals are somewhat weak, I say: I LOVE PAUL HENSON’s VOICE! It perfectly fits Jimmy and Oteil’s play. I don’t know if I would have been interested in this fabulous band if I didn’t hear first “Search Yourself” and “Stand up People”… seriously.

Peter Erskine - Motion Poet (1988) FLAC w. Scans - MR

This recording has a grand aura about it of the Jaco 'Birthday Concert'. It's not surprising since some of the players are the same and this CD was recorded only a year after Jaco's passing. There is a real street carnival sound, a very festive element to this piece.

Aquarium Rescue Unit - In A Perfect World [1994](fl.)

The Aquarium Rescue Unit released In a Perfect World in 1994. The album is packed with some great jams and beautiful sounds, but average bluesy rock songs. This album, however, was popular with jam band fans, and led to the band's appearances at the H.O.R.D.E. Festival. In a Perfect World probably translated well live, but on record the band falls flat. The funky "How Tight's Your Drawers" has some awesome organ and flute parts, but the lyrics are pedestrian, as they are on most of the record. Every song on this CD sounds similar and, upon completion, leaves little imprint. There is a line in "Swallows" that describes the album well: "There we go again, searching for another escapade." The Aquarium Rescue Unit is a good example of the technically proficient band whose chops are tangential excursions, not tight songwriting. Bands like Blues Traveler and the Spin Doctors were successful because of their pop instincts. And Phish mixed pop selections with eclectic musicianship. Since the Aquarium Rescue Unit lacks enough of both, their albums make little more than good background music. Track down music by these bands instead: Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Phish, Everything, the Spin Doctors, or Allgood.

Out of print album :-(

Claus Ogerman featuring Michael Brecker (1991) FLAC w. Scans - MR

Landmark! What else to say?

Eric Kloss - "Concsiousness!" (1970) @256

An excellent album from Eric Kloss -- maybe one of his last good ones, too! The record has him playing with a hip group of young players -- basically the Miles Davis rhythm section (Chick Corea, Dave Holland, and Jack DeJohnette) plus guitarist Pat Martino, who was really stretching out at this time. The resultant electric grooves are way different than Kloss' earlier work, yet still much tighter and more soulful than his later stuff -- with some slight bits of funk and soul jazz to keep things real. All tracks are fairly long, and the record features versions of "Sunshine Superman" and "Songs To Aging Children" -- plus the tunes "Consciousness" and "Outward Wisdom".

One of the true child prodigies of the ‘60s, saxophonist Eric Kloss holds the distinction of having a record contract with Prestige Records at the ripe young age of 15. Blind, smart as a whip, and technically proficient at even this early stage in his career, Kloss went on to make some remarkable albums up through the early ‘70s and then disappeared into academia.

Like a lot of other jazz cerca 1969-70, there's a definite rock influence both in the rhythms and in Corea's use of the electric piano (he also plays acoustic). Consciousness! (tracks 6-10) was recorded in January 1970, and sounds a lot more like the intense Fillmore recordings. Pat Martino, who joins the band on guitar, is an explosive presence.

This is highly recommended to any fan of Corea, Holland, or DeJohnette as well as to anyone who likes the sound of late 60s post-bop jazz. And besides, you will never hear a funkier version of "Sunshine Superman" in your life.

Eric Kloss was (and supposedly still is) an edgy post-bop altoist, obviously aware of Coltrane's innovations but with a very distinct, individual sound. On some of the tracks he plays tenor. Anyway, he definitely deserves mention alongside Jackie McLean and Gary Bartz.

Track listing:

1 Sunshine Superman (10:37)
2 Kay (10:24)
3 Outward Wisdom (6:05)
4 Songs To Aging Children (6:58)
5 Consciousness (8:36)

Personnel:

Eric Kloss - Saxophone [Alto, Tenor]
Dave Holland - Bass
Jack DeJohnette - Drums
Pat Martino - Guitar [6 String, 12 String]
Chick Corea - Piano, Electric Piano

Kenny Pore - Sessions: Volume One (1998) FLAC w. Scans - MR

These sessions have a Latino, smoothish sound that may remind you of the Victor Feldman sessions in L.A. from a decade earlier.

Chester Thompson - A Joyful Noise (1991) FLAC w. Scans - MR

There was an anonymous request for something off the beaten path featuring Otmaro Ruiz from an earlier post. The first thing that came to mind was this solo effort from a Mother of Invention and genesis touring drummer. Brandon Fields being on board certainly helped sway me in this direction. The other big names on this gig are those of Walt & Tom Fowler.

Eliane Elias - So Far So Close (1989) FLAC w. Scans - MR

Don Grolnick - Weaver Of Dreams (1990) FLAC w. Scans - MR

It would be safe to say that this cover art about says it all. Miss you, Don!

Joe Lovano - Landmarks (1991) FLAC w. Scans - MR

Here's one I was wondering if Marcelo had in his arsenal. This is a no-brainer for any saxophone aficionado. Joe reminds me an awful lot of Gerry Mulligan even though Mulligan was predominantly a baritone player throughout most of his career. Since the Blue Note train posts is running along here, here's another stop along the line.

Joey Calderazzo - The Traveler (1993) FLAC w. Scans - MR

This one fits right in there with the Rick Margitza post. It's like adding needed laces to a good pair of shoes.

Otmaro Ruiz - Distant Friends (1993) FLAC w. Scans - MR

I first really started to dig his playing when I listened to Frank Gambale's 'Thinking Out Loud.' My favorite of Frank's, deleted from JVC, hugely underrated, but by far the most gorgeous tone ever cranked from his Ibanez, Otmaro's melodies perfectly paired with Frank to form great energy. Here on this release the energy is evident, only no Ibanez!

Dave Carpenter
Alex Acuna
Peter Erskine
Justo Almario
John Pena
Ernie Watts
Aaron Serfaty
Otmaro Ruiz, et al!!!

Look at the prices being asked for this CD and the prices for some of the CD's represented on many of the more recent posts and then ask yourself why it is that some of our better known bloggers are coming under increasingly heavy shelling.

Garry Dial Trio - Never Is Now (1991) FLAC w. Scans - MR

Just when you thought the impetus for the prior post was due to remarkable downloading numbers, the 'Dial & Oatts' post scored over 500 downloads in less than 72 hours. Here's a great session from my favorite of all settings and genres -- the standard jazz trio.

Since my last post of Michael Shrieve was so well received - 400+ downloads in just a few days - I thought I would send this piece your way, especially since it is by far the most obscure and hardest to find of his material.

All The Kings Men - Made In Holland [1994](WAV) -MR-

Jazzdance formation from Rotterdam (Holland) In 1994 the band wins the "Heineken Crossover Award" and in januari 1995 they win the "NCRV-Popslag" which is a sort of competition between new bands. I've seen this band live 2 times (i also must have some videorecordings of them somewhere in the house)

Anyway, these recordings have never been released on cd, in fact i got this (burned)cd from Reyn Ouwehand (keyboards)....i met him after a gig of him with some other band and we spoke about "All The Kings Men". I said i had videorecordings of All The Kings Men and he really liked to have a copy of that, so i said ; "Lets trade', and he said that was ok. It took hom almost one year to send me these recordings. Well, better late than never. He wrote that it was ok to share these recordings with everyone. So the fact that it's never been released means that i can't provide covers.

So, If you like real funky stuff; make sure to pick this one up.....you won't regret it!!!

LineUp;
Ad de Jong - drums
E'velyne Derks - vocals
Jan van Duikeren - trumpet
Lodewijk van Gorp - sax

The last DMP post from a few days ago recorded 500 downloads in the first 24 hours so I thought that maybe, just maybe, the DMP label is what the draw has been, like so many other posts of that very obscure label. This is real tight stuff. It's not the same flavor as 'Pleasure Seekers' on the Triloka label with Weckl & Patitucci however, it is a superb listen nonetheless particularly since it's been 25 years since release.

Kevin Eubanks – Spiritalk 2, Revelations (1995) Flac w. scans - MR

First time I saw and heard of Kevin Eubanks was on the Jay Leno’s Tonight Show in the Mid-90’s (via my satellite dish): a healthy good looking guy with a large smile …and one hell of a technique on guitar ! I’ve never been disappointed by the man’s releases since then. In order to bring you another side of this very talented musician after the CHEZ previous post, here is one who is far from being any smooth. This album has got soul, I advise you listen to the whole of it as one single track.

Dave Holland, Bass/ Kevin Eubanks, Guitar/ Robin Eubanks, Trombone/ Marvin "Smitty" Smith, Drums/ Gerald Moore, Guitar(3&4)/ Kent Jordan, Flute (Alto)/ Gene Jackson, Drums(7&8).

1.Faith/ 2.Like the Wind/ 3.Whispers of Life/ 4.Revelations/ 5.Earth/ 6.Sun/ 7.Moon/ 8.Being/ 9.Passing.

David Torn - Tripping Over God (1995) FLAC w. Scans - MR

This one is hard to describe. I thought I was really into his 'Cloud About Mercury' with Bruford, Levin & Isham backing him, but here without any buddies, Torn puts together an adventure of incredulous sonic bliss. You be the judge. I remember finding this CD in filing box of a small record store in either Belleville or O'Fallon, Illinois in late 1995. There was no jewel box or any info since the disc was wedged behind the alphabetizer card. When I brought it to the desk the man said he's been sitting on the misplaced front artwork for some time and didn't even know if the CD was around in the store. He give it to me for nothing since I was buying about 3 other discs with David on it. The tray art is not among the scans here.

Grant Geissman - Flying Colors (1991) FLAC w. Scans - MR

A little drift back to those Southern California days. Does anyone have Grant's "Drinkin' From The Money River"? I'd settle for a lowly cassette> 128kbps rip if that's all that can be scrounged up! Come on guys, I don't ask for much!

Patrick O'Hearn - Rivers Gonna Rise (1988) FLAC w. Scans - MR

This my personal favorite from Patrick's lengthy discography. Don't let the band lineup lead you to believe this is going to sound like Frank Zappa, minus Frank Zappa!

Claus Ogerman Orchestra - The Gate Of Dreams (1977) FLAC w. Scans - MR

I am missing a page from the book but a quick Google search turned up this:

David Sanborn
John Guerin
George Benson
Peter Maunu
Joe Sample
Chuck Domanico
Ralph Grierson
Michael Brecker
Larry Bunker
Chino Valdes

Garry Dial & Dick Oatts - Brassworks (1990) FLAC w. Scans - MR

Here's the entire band from the Red Rodney post a few days ago. Solid, solid work! Moody, orchestral-like, intense, and very nicely arranged. This is a very digitally rich, live to 2-track recording. Please don't miss this one!

Urban Knights - Urban Knights (1995) FLAC w. Scans - MR

Don't go by just the smoothish lineup, there's plenty of juice here!
